Honing Cylinders
The importance of torque plates.
What is a torque plate? They are plates you should bolt on a cylinder before honing.
When cylinders are installed on your engine and you torque down the head bolts the pressure will distort the aluminum cylinders. If cylinders were round before assembling them, after you torque the head bolts it will no longer be round. Unless you use quality torque plates before honing.
When we hone the cylinders we install BHJ Torque Plates, and torque the cylinders with head gaskets the same as it would be on the engine. The next step is to hone out the cylinders until they are true and round. Finally, when the cylinders are reinstalled on the engine and you torque down the head bolts the cylinder will retain its round shape.
Are all torque plates equal?
No.
We have experimented with various torque plates over the years. We have found that most torque plates, both top and bottom, are made out of cast iron or steel. We prefer the BHJ Torque Plates because they have given us the best results over time. We want the torque plate to represent the cylinders as they are in an assembled engine, and that is just what the BHJ Torque Plates do. BHJ Torque Plates are made out of aluminum (as is Harley engine cases). The lower plate is split (to represent the split in Harley engine cases) and the top is solid aluminum (representing the head). We feel that using BHJ Torque Plates your cylinders will have the truest hone available.
